War of Weimar 155 – Escape

---------- Bottom of the Massive Crater in Front of Base No. 2 ----------

"AAARGH—! It hurts!"

Moses' scream echoed throughout the cavern.

Vance couldn't help but force a bitter smile.

"Yeah! That's exactly how I felt a moment ago."

Simon immediately rushed over and knelt beside him.

"Hang on, Moses!"

But Moses' condition was clearly worse than Vance's had been.

The intense electrical shock caused his entire body to convulse violently. Moments later, he lost consciousness.

"He's passed out!"

Meanwhile, the rest of the team began eliminating the remaining smaller monsters in the area.

The gigantic Mother-Class Centipede had been completely carbonized, lying in the cavern like a blackened hill.

The air was filled with the stench of burnt flesh and the sharp scent of residual electricity.

Matt and Hank began searching for a possible route out of the underground chamber.

At that moment, Akashi returned in Vulcan.

"I've checked the area."

He pointed toward the opening high above.

"The hole the monster fell through does lead to the surface. I can even see the sky from there."

"But it's too small. None of our mechs can fit through."

Hank frowned.

"Then let's blast it open with a few shells."

"No."

Matt immediately shut the idea down.

"This place is already a massive underground cavity. If we start blowing things up, we could trigger a large-scale collapse."

"And then we'll all be buried alive."

Silence fell over the group.

Just then, static crackled through the radio.

Bzzzt—

"General Hank, do you copy?"

Hank immediately grabbed the communicator.

"Rab? The radio's working again! Where are you?"

Rab's voice came through clearly.

"We're moving toward your position now. Is everyone alright?"

Hank glanced around the cavern.

"Everyone survived!"

A sigh of relief could almost be heard from the other side.

"That's great news."

"We detected a massive electrical surge underground earlier."

"It must've been rough down there."

Hank couldn't help but laugh.

"That was Lightning Commander's doing."

"What?"

Rab paused in surprise.

"It's a long story."

Hank looked up toward the massive opening above.

"If you head toward the location where the electrical discharge occurred, you should be able to find us."

"Understood."

"Though the discharge covered a pretty wide area."

"That's because we just killed a Mother-Class monster down here."

Hank patted the giant carbonized corpse beside him.

"And now all of us are trapped inside this enormous underground cavern."

"Copy that."

Rab replied.

"Stay where you are. We'll figure out a way to get everyone out."

"Roger."

The transmission ended.

A short distance away, Winston patted Vincent on the shoulder.

"Hey. Wake up."

Vincent slowly opened his eyes.

"...I'm alive?"

"Unfortunately, yes."

Winston chuckled.

Vincent sat up and looked around.

"Did we win?"

"We did."

Winston nodded.

"General Hank and his team arrived just in time."

"Otherwise, things would've ended very differently."

Vincent blinked.

"General Hank?"

He turned and saw Simon, Vance, and the unconscious Moses nearby.

"What happened?"

Winston shrugged.

"It's a pretty long story."

"But right now everyone's trying to figure out how to get out of this hellhole."

Vincent lowered his head.

"Sorry..."

"I don't think I helped much."

Winston patted him on the shoulder.

"Trust me."

"You wouldn't want to end up like Moses."

Vincent looked toward the unconscious pilot.

"What happened to him?"

Winston pointed.

"The electricity went straight through him."

Simon added:

"He passed out from the pain."

The group couldn't help but laugh.

At least that meant he was still alive.

---------- Surface Level ----------

Gabriel led Gabrielle through the skies, maintaining aerial surveillance.

On the streets below, Fire Tank, Flame Knight, Seraph, and Polar Bear units continued clearing out the remaining monsters.

Collapsed buildings and burning debris could still be seen everywhere.

Inside the command vehicle, the officers were discussing rescue options.

Leona studied the underground scan data.

"According to my calculations, if we attempt a large-scale bombardment to open a path, the surrounding ground layers could collapse."

She enlarged the holographic display.

"And if that happens, not only will the people below be endangered, but the surface structures will suffer even greater damage."

Rab rubbed his forehead.

"This is a headache."

Amatsuke proposed another solution.

"If we can't blow our way in..."

"Then we'll have to drill."

Ares nodded.

"Should we call in the Drill Mech?"

Diego immediately picked up a communicator.

"I'll handle it."

He began sending requests.

"You guys keep dealing with the remaining monsters."

"I'll arrange the support units."

Everyone turned their gaze toward the massive collapse zone in the distance.

The people underground were waiting for rescue.

And the battle on the surface...

Was far from over.

Wima War 152 – Laboratory

----------Above the Great Pit----------

Ait piloted the mech and stopped in front of a ruined building.
Beside him, Notan looked up at the towering structure.

Ait: “How much longer are they going to take?”

Notan: “No idea. Doesn’t look like they’ll be done anytime soon.”

Ait raised his head and looked toward the rooftop.

Ait: “I’m going up to check the top floor.”

Notan: “Alright. Be careful.”

Elsewhere.

Boland and Nice followed Syla into the building.

Time had long since consumed the entire structure.
The walls were stained and cracked, windows shattered, and the sound of rusted steel groaning echoed through the corridors whenever the wind blew through.

Yet somehow, the heavy concrete frame still barely held the old hospital together.

Step by step, the three climbed upward.

Seventh floor.

Syla suddenly stopped walking.

Syla: “Finally… I’m back.”

Boland: “What is this place?”

Syla stared quietly into the depths of the hallway.

Syla: “This used to be where I worked.”

Nice: “Wow…”

Boland glanced around the area.

Boland: “This hospital is huge. But Syla, I need to say this first…”

Syla nodded softly.

Syla: “I know. I’ll grab what I need, and then we leave immediately.”

Nice: “This place feels way too quiet.”

At the end of the hallway.

A heavy metal door stood half open.

Boland raised his rifle and glanced at the faded metal sign beside it.

— “LABORATORY”

Syla silently tightened her grip on her weapon.

Nice and Boland instinctively raised their guard as well.

Even though they had encountered no monsters along the way…

Both of them could tell—

Syla was afraid of something.

The door slowly creaked open.

And then—

A massive room appeared before them.

Rows upon rows of shelves stretched deep into the darkness.
Countless culture containers filled every rack.

Some had turned black with decay.
Others had grown twisted plants inside.

Several of them had become so massive that they pierced straight through the ceiling itself.

Sunlight poured down through the cracks above, illuminating the overgrown plants like some grotesque forest.

Syla walked straight toward one of the offices as if she already knew the way.

Boland and Nice followed behind her.

And there—

In the corner of the office—

Was a dog cage.

Syla froze instantly.

Her breathing began to tremble.

Inside the cage…

Only the dried skeletal remains of a dog remained.

The tiny bones were still curled together.

As though it had waited for its owner to return.

Syla’s eyes lost focus.

Slowly, she fell to her knees.

Her trembling hands gripped the rusted bars of the cage.

Syla: “…Snow…”

Her voice was so hoarse it was barely audible.

She lowered her head.

Tears began falling uncontrollably onto the dusty floor.

How long had this place been abandoned?

How long had it waited here?

Until the very end.

It never got to see its owner come back.

Syla finally broke down completely.

She pressed her forehead against the cage as years of buried emotions collapsed all at once.

Boland stood behind her silently.

Without saying a word, he walked forward and gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

Nice lowered his head quietly as well.

No one interrupted her grief.

After a long while…

Syla wiped away her tears and took a deep breath.

She walked toward a small safe beside the desk.

After entering the code, the lock clicked open.

Inside was a laptop that had somehow remained intact all these years.

Syla turned around and looked at Boland.

Her eyes were still red.

Syla: “I’m ready.”

Boland nodded.

Boland: “Alright. I’ll contact Ait.”

Syla followed behind the two men.

Just as they were about to leave—

She suddenly stopped.

Syla: “Wait…”

Boland: “What now?”

Syla looked up toward the gigantic plant that had burst through the ceiling.

Syla: “This plant…”

Boland frowned.

Boland: “You didn’t notice it earlier?”

Nice gave a small bitter laugh.

Nice: “I think you were a little too focused on your office.”

Boland: “Still… didn’t you people ever think growing something this huge in a lab might collapse the building?”

Syla’s expression changed instantly.

Syla: “That’s exactly the problem.”

She quickly walked toward the shelves.

Carefully examining the identification numbers on the containers.

But after so many years…

And with the plant having shattered several of the containers apart…

Most of the labels were impossible to read.

Syla could only estimate the specimen number from nearby fragments.

Nice walked over.

He handed her a small knife.

With his other hand, he picked up a relatively intact zip-lock bag from the floor.

Boland: “Nice?”

Nice shrugged.

Nice: “Had a feeling she’d need it.”

Syla accepted the tools.

Syla: “Thank you.”

With practiced precision, she cut a small sample from the plant.

Then carefully sealed it inside the bag.

Boland: “We need to move. Now!”

Suddenly—

The sound of countless insects erupted around them.

Ait’s urgent voice burst through the communicator.

Ait: “Hurry up! The monsters found us! They’re heading your way!”

Boland: “We’re already moving! But we’re still on the seventh floor!”

A brief silence followed.

Ait: “Seventh floor… one, two, three, four… Forget going down. Head to the rooftop. I’ll pick you up there!”

Boland: “Huh?”

Syla immediately understood.

Syla: “Ait’s right. It’s faster to climb three floors up than rush down seven floors.”

Several minutes later.

The three burst onto the rooftop.

Violent wind slammed into them.

And there—

Ait’s heavily armed mech was already waiting.

The three immediately grabbed onto the support frame attached to the mech’s leg.

The next second—

The thrusters roared to life.

The mech launched off the rooftop, carrying them through the air before safely landing back on the ground below.

Notan: “Are we fighting here?”

Boland looked toward the distant black swarm rapidly approaching them.

Boland: “Bad location for a defensive line. We move first and find better ground.”

Syla lowered her head.

Syla: “Sorry… I delayed everyone’s mission.”

Nice smiled lightly.

Nice: “It’s fine. The others underground probably still need more time anyway.”

Ait activated the mech’s thrusters once more.

Ait: “Fasten yourselves in. We’re pulling out.”
