Warma Wars 173 – White Dragon Tank

------ Base Four Conference Room ------

Sonia looked over the list in his hands and raised his head after confirming the final entry.

Sonia: “All right, that’s everyone on the list.”

Jacob: “I didn’t expect Staff Officer Rosa to be joining us as well.”

Roger: “Seriously, we’ve got quite a lineup this time.”

Sonia turned to look at Roger.

Sonia: “Roger, you’ll be sending a Gabriel unit over, right?”

Roger: “That’s right.”

Jacob: “It looks like our overall lineup is somewhat similar to the previous group.”

Jacob: “In that case, the Pachycephalosaurus should still have a chance to prove its worth.”

Sonia nodded, then suddenly remembered something else.

Sonia: “By the way, Jacob, I’d like to double-check something about the Raptor System, specifically the Pachycephalosaurus.”

He paused briefly before continuing.

Sonia: “Back then, the Firebird encountered enemies capable of attacking from long range during combat.”

Sonia: “Have you made any adjustments to address that issue since then?”

Jacob: “So far, we’ve only added nail guns to the shoulders to improve its mid-range combat capabilities.”

Sonia: “That should do for now. At least it gives us another way to deal with that kind of threat.”

Cooper: “Then I guess we’ve pretty much finalized the team roster, haven’t we?”

Kengo checked the list as he read out the names of the current team members.

Kengo: “Brick, Morrison, Marshall, Rosa, Takashi… Will Snow Mountain Base be sending anyone as well?”

Only then did Sonia remember that there were still a few names he had yet to mention.

Sonia: “I almost forgot.”

Sonia: “Francis, Frank, and Locke will be joining us too.”

Cooper: “Who’s Francis?”

Sonia: “He’s Frank’s younger brother.”

Sonia: “He’s also received pilot training, and he’ll be operating a mech during this mission.”

Roger: “As for my side, in addition to the original arrangements, my second-in-command, Biggs, will be piloting another Gabriel unit.”

Jacob looked somewhat intrigued when he heard that.

Jacob: “Speaking of which, your mech isn’t just enormous. Its design is completely different from an ordinary Gabriel, too.”

Roger raised an eyebrow.

Roger: “Oh? You’ve already seen it?”

Sonia: “Every Gabriel unit is registered in the system. Besides, yours is a custom-built model. It’s pretty hard to miss.”

Kengo: “Besides, it practically looks like a giant pair of scissors.”

Kengo: “I’ve never seen a design like that before.”

Roger: “Ha ha! That thing took a lot of work to get right!”

Seeing Roger’s smug expression, Jacob couldn’t help shaking his head.

Jacob: “You really have no intention of keeping it a secret, do you?”

A few chuckles echoed through the conference room.

A moment later, Sonia brought the discussion back to business.

Sonia: “All right, there’s one more thing we need to discuss.”

Sonia: “Kengo, have you settled on someone from your side yet? I mean the researcher responsible for the Thunderstorm Bomb.”

Kengo’s expression immediately became a little awkward.

Kengo: “I’m still trying to talk him into it.”

Sonia: “You’re still trying to convince him?”

Kengo: “You know how bomb researchers are… They tend to be a little eccentric.”

He let out a helpless sigh.

Kengo: “Still, I’ll find a way to get him to agree.”

Sonia glanced at him, seemingly already anticipating how much trouble that man might cause, but chose not to press the issue.

Sonia: “All right. Then everyone should make the necessary preparations. We’ll assemble at Shengzhu in one week.”

Cooper: “Understood.”

As the meeting came to an end, personnel at each base began preparing for the upcoming operation.

Kengo knew all too well that the real challenge was still waiting for him.

After all, convincing the man known as “Firecracker Jesse” was no easy task.

------ Base Seven ------

At the landing pad of Base Seven, several crew members were busy checking the condition of the machines.

Chris stood in front of the command area, gazing at the distant sky as if waiting for something.

Suddenly, a message came through his communicator.

He glanced down at the message, and the corners of his mouth immediately curled into a smile.

Chris: “They’re on their way back! Everyone, get ready!”

As soon as he finished speaking, the personnel on the landing pad sprang into action.

Shortly afterward, two vehicles powered up one after the other.

Raemaru piloted the Solar Ark out of the base first, with Noi following close behind in the Water Specter.

The two machines headed out in single file toward the direction from which Red and the others were expected to arrive.

Just then, Kirito approached from behind.

Kirito: “Chris, am I supposed to go with you, too?”

Chris turned around as if he had just heard the most ridiculous question imaginable.

Chris: “Obviously! Of course you’re coming!”

Kirito was momentarily taken aback.

Chris folded his arms, an unmistakable grin gradually spreading across his face.

Chris: “Besides, this is the perfect chance to show them our latest creation.”

He paused deliberately, then lowered his voice, wearing the expression of someone who was about to enjoy a good show.

Chris: “Heh heh…”

Looking at Chris’s expression, Kirito suddenly had a bad feeling about this.

Kirito: “…What are you plotting this time?”

Chris didn’t answer and simply turned to look toward the other side of the landing pad.

There, inside a dedicated hangar, rested a heavy vehicle that had yet to be officially unveiled.

Its pristine white armor gleamed coldly under the lights, while its sleek contours radiated an unmistakable sense of power.

The hangar doors remained firmly shut.

Yet even the faint outline visible beyond the doors was enough to spark the imagination.

Chris grinned.

Chris: “You’ll find out when they get here.”

He raised his hand and pointed toward the hangar.

Chris: “After all… this time, we’re going to show everyone what a true—White Dragon Tank looks like!”

Kirito followed his gesture and looked toward the hangar.

------ Shengzhu / Base Five / Underground Hangar / Bomb Research Lab ------

Kengo left the conference room and took the elevator down to the underground hangar.

As he walked deeper into the hangar along its corridors, he began to hear a series of distant rumbles.

碰!
Bang!

KABOOM—!

Along with the explosions came the clanging of metal, the rumble of machinery, and the strange crackling of some unknown electrical current.

Kengo stopped in front of a massive metal door.

A nameplate had originally been mounted on the door, bearing the name “Jesse Boom.”

However, the name had long since been violently crossed out, and another nickname had been scrawled beside it in crooked red spray paint.

—“Firecracker Jesse.”

Kengo looked at the nameplate and couldn’t help sighing.

“…What has that guy blown up this time?”

He reached out and pushed the door open.

However, the scene before him stood in stark contrast to the explosion-filled corridor outside.

The room was packed with all kinds of equipment, metal components, and unfinished bombs.

Burn marks covered the floor, and a thin wisp of white smoke was still rising from one corner of the room.

Amid the chaos, a scientist with flames burning atop his head was completely absorbed in his work, carefully adjusting a complex device on his workbench.

He hadn’t noticed someone entering the room at all.

Kengo walked over to him.

“How’s it going, Jesse?”

“WHAAAAAA!”

Jesse sprang out of his chair in fright, the flames atop his head shooting upward and nearly hitting the pipes on the ceiling.

“W-When did you get in here?!”

Kengo looked at him with an utterly helpless expression.

“Just now. Go ahead and keep working. I’m just here to check on your progress.”

Jesse patted his chest to make sure his heart was still beating, then immediately turned his attention back to the workbench.

“Progress? Oh! Almost there! I think I’m just one step away from finishing!”

Suddenly, as if remembering something, he turned to look at Kengo.

“Perfect timing! Come give me a hand over here. Help me lift this thing into that puddle!”

“…A puddle?”

“Yeah! Hurry, hurry! Time waits for no one!”

Before Kengo could even react, Jesse had already grabbed one end of the machine and started dragging it away.

Kengo looked at the machine, which was emitting a faint electrical crackle, then back at Jesse.

“I have a very bad feeling about this.”

“Relax! Nothing will go wrong this time!”

“You say that every time.”

Despite his complaints, Kengo stepped forward to help.

Together, they carried the machine over to a nearby puddle.

Jesse nodded with satisfaction, then grabbed Kengo and dragged him into a nearby blast-resistant shelter.

“All right! Time to witness a miracle!”

Jesse put on his safety goggles and casually tossed a pair to Kengo.

Kengo caught the goggles and silently put them on.

“Is it too late for me to back out now?”

“Way too late!”

Jesse flashed an excited grin and pressed a button on the control panel.

The next second—

KABOOOOOOOM!

A deafening explosion instantly engulfed the entire hangar.

A blinding white light erupted from the center of the puddle, while countless electrical currents surged along the floor and metal pipes like raging silver serpents.

Blue-white arcs of electricity leaped wildly through the air, forming visible streams of current that illuminated the entire hangar like daylight.

The blast-resistant shelter shook violently.

Kengo gripped the handrail tightly, staring at the apocalyptic scene outside.

“This is what you meant by… the final step?!”

Jesse excitedly leaned against the observation window.

“It worked! It actually worked! The current propagation efficiency has increased by thirty-seven percent! This is an absolute masterpiece of genius!”

“I’d rather know whether our insurance covers this level of damage!”

After quite some time, the electrical currents finally began to dissipate.

The hangar finally fell quiet again, leaving only the alarms from the equipment and the smell of burning materials lingering in the air.

Jesse took off his safety goggles and gazed at his experimental results with satisfaction.

Kengo silently released the handrail and took a deep breath.

“…Jesse.”

“Yeah?”

“Have you ever considered notifying the people nearby before conducting your next experiment?”

“Of course! That’s exactly why I conducted the experiment in the underground hangar!”

Kengo fell silent for a few seconds.

“Forget it. Talking to you about this probably requires another round of mental preparation.”

He looked at Jesse, his expression gradually becoming more serious.

“Let’s get down to business.”

“What is it?”

“Would you be willing to go with them to Base Seven?”

Jesse’s smile vanished instantly.

“No!!”

His answer came so quickly that even Kengo was caught off guard.

“…Could you at least think about it for three seconds?”

“No need! The answer is no!”

Jesse turned around and began tidying up the tools on his workbench, deliberately avoiding Kengo’s gaze.

“I still have plenty of research to do. The equipment here can’t just be moved around, and my new bomb isn’t finished yet…”

“Those are all excuses.”

Kengo interrupted him calmly.

“I want to know the real reason.”

Jesse stopped what he was doing.

The hangar fell silent for a moment.

The warning lights continued to flash, illuminating the flickering flames atop his head.

“…Because I’m afraid.”

His voice was much quieter than before.

“Afraid of what?”

Jesse slowly tightened his grip on the tool in his hand.

“I’m afraid my bombs might hurt people they were never meant to hurt.”

He lowered his head and looked at his hands.

“With something like a bomb, even the slightest miscalculation or a single mistake in the process could lead to irreversible consequences.”

“I can calculate the blast radius, control the detonation timing, and estimate the force of the shock wave.”

“But I can’t guarantee that an accident will never happen.”

“And besides…”

He paused.

“If I go to the battlefield with you, and something goes wrong, my own comrades could end up inside the blast radius.”

Jesse raised his head and forced a faint smile.

“I don’t want anyone getting hurt because of my weapons.”

“So you’d rather stay here?”

“At least here, I can control the conditions of my experiments.”

“Even if I blow up an entire hangar, no one will actually lose their life because of it.”

Kengo looked around the room.

The blackened marks on the walls, the workbench warped by an explosion, and the machine that was still smoking.

He remained silent for a moment before slowly speaking.

“Jesse, you know what?”

“What?”

“I’ve always thought you were a really strange guy.”

Jesse froze.

“Hey! What kind of consolation is that?!”

“Just hear me out.”

Kengo walked over to the workbench and picked up an unfinished bomb.

“You love studying bombs so much, and every time an experiment succeeds, you get as excited as a little kid.”

“But whenever it comes to actually using them, you become absolutely terrified.”

He looked at Jesse.

“So which is it? Do you love bombs, or do you hate them?”

Jesse didn’t answer.

“…What I love is studying them.”

After a moment, he finally spoke in a low voice.

“I love discovering their limits and turning the impossible into something possible.”

“And I love seeing the things I create unleash power beyond what anyone expected.”

He looked at the bomb on the workbench, his gaze growing more determined before quickly fading again.

“But I hate seeing people get hurt because of them.”

Kengo nodded.

“I understand.”

He placed the bomb back on the workbench.

“Then why not become the person who can prevent all of that from happening?”

Jesse looked up.

“…What do you mean?”

“You just said that you can calculate blast radii, control detonation timing, and estimate the force of shock waves.”

Kengo gestured toward the research equipment surrounding them.

“Isn’t that exactly what you’ve been researching all this time?”

“But no matter how carefully you calculate everything, you can never completely eliminate the possibility of an accident…”

“That’s right.”

Kengo didn’t deny it.

“No one in this world can guarantee that they’ll never make a mistake.”

“Even the finest pilot can make a poor decision on the battlefield, and even the most sophisticated weapon can malfunction at a critical moment.”

He paused for a moment.

“That’s precisely why we must keep researching, keep making improvements, and do everything we can to reduce the chances of those accidents happening.”

Kengo looked directly at Jesse.

“If you refuse to use your bombs because you’re afraid they might hurt your own people, then how will you protect them when the enemy actually attacks?”

Jesse was stunned.

“If the enemy has overwhelming firepower, and we lack effective weapons, all we might be able to do is stand by and watch our comrades get hurt…”

Kengo’s voice grew heavier.

“When that happens, can you really stay here in this hangar with a clear conscience, telling yourself that at least you didn’t personally hurt anyone?”

Jesse clenched his fists.

He wanted to argue back, but found himself unable to utter a single word.

Kengo didn’t press him any further and instead walked over to the device they had just tested.

“Jesse, you’ve always viewed bombs as things that can potentially hurt people.”

He turned around.

“But I believe what truly matters isn’t how powerful a bomb is, but what the person wielding it intends to do with that power.”

「……」
“…”

“You can make bombs more powerful, or you can make them more precise.”

“You can control the blast radius, design safer detonation mechanisms, and even make them effective against specific targets only.”

Kengo looked at him.

“If even you aren’t willing to do these things, then who else can do them for us?”

Jesse stared at Kengo in a daze.

The flames atop his head flickered gently.

“But… what if I really do make a mistake?”

This time, his voice held none of its usual exaggeration or confidence.

Only genuine anxiety remained.

Kengo remained silent for a moment, then reached out and patted him on the shoulder.

“Then we’ll work together to find a way to keep that from happening.”

Jesse looked up.

“Together?”

“That’s right. Together.”

Kengo gave him a faint smile.

“You focus on weapons research, and we’ll provide you with firsthand information from the battlefield.”

“After every battle, we can bring back the problems we encountered so you’ll know what needs to be improved.”

“If the blast radius is too large, we’ll find a way to reduce it. If the detonation timing isn’t precise enough, we’ll redesign it. If there’s a risk of hitting our own people, we’ll add safety mechanisms.”

“You don’t have to bear all the risks alone.”

He paused, his tone growing more resolute.

“Besides, once you’re actually on the battlefield and see your comrades facing danger with your own eyes, you’ll understand exactly where this power needs to be used.”

Kengo gazed toward the depths of the hangar.

“We’re going to Base Seven not to prove how strong we are, nor to create more powerful and terrifying weapons.”

“We’re going so that the people who matter to us can live on in safety.”

He turned back to Jesse.

“That’s why I’m not asking you to let go of your fear of bombs.”

“I want you to turn that fear into a reason to be even more careful.”

“Don’t give up the chance to protect your comrades just because you’re afraid of hurting them.”

“Instead, let your desire to keep them safe drive you to make your weapons safer, more precise, and more reliable.”

The hangar fell silent once again.

Jesse lowered his head and remained silent for a long time.

He looked at his hands, then at the unfinished bomb on the workbench.

The components that had once filled him with excitement now seemed to carry a different meaning.

Only after a long while did he finally speak.

“…If I really do go with you to Base Seven…”

Kengo looked at him.

“Yeah?”

“Can you promise me one thing?”

“Go ahead.”

Jesse raised his head, no longer avoiding Kengo’s gaze.

“Before using any of my weapons, make sure all our nearby teammates are in safe positions.”

“If anything I design has the potential to hurt our own people, you have to tell me.”

He took a deep breath.

“I don’t want to become some lunatic who does nothing but make things explode.”

“I want to become a researcher… who can help everyone make it back alive.”

Kengo smiled.

“What’s the problem with that?”

He held out his hand to Jesse.

“However, I have one condition of my own.”

“What condition?”

“At least give me a warning before your next experiment.”

Jesse stared at him blankly for two seconds.

“…What does that have to do with anything we just agreed on?!”

“Of course it does! I should be part of your experimental safety calculations, shouldn’t I?!”

“Oh, give me a break! I never included you in my calculations!”

“Then add me now!”

The two glared at each other.

A few seconds later, Jesse finally burst out laughing.

He reached out and firmly shook Kengo’s hand.

“All right.”

“I’ll go with you to Base Seven.”

He looked toward his workbench, the familiar spark of enthusiasm returning to his eyes.

“However, I need to finish this experiment first.”

“With just a few more parameter adjustments, I’ll be able to control the current’s propagation within a designated area!”

Kengo’s smile immediately froze.

“…Wait a second. Didn’t you just say the experiment was finished?”

“That was the previous stage! We’re on to the next stage now!”

Jesse excitedly rushed back to the control panel.

“Don’t worry! Nothing will go wrong this time!”

Kengo watched him walk away and slowly closed his eyes.

“…Is it too late for me to quit recruiting people for Base Seven?”

The next second—

KABOOOOOOOM!

The underground hangar was once again illuminated by the flash of an explosion.

Amid the deafening roar, Jesse’s laughter continued to echo throughout the entire hangar.

But this time, he no longer intended to stay behind alone.

Because he had finally realized that the true subject of his research had never been merely the destructive power of bombs.

It was how to turn that power into a weapon capable of protecting his comrades.

Warma War 172 – An Apology

------Base Four / Eagle Base------

Inside the conference room at Base Four, Sonia and Cooper were holding a video conference with the leaders of Dolphin Base, Pirate Base, and Shengzhu Base.

The representatives of the four bases appeared on the screen one after another.

Sonia looked over the documents in his hands and, after reviewing the cooperation proposals from each base, spoke first.

Sonia: “So, the current plan is for Pirate Base to build a new vehicle, Dolphin Base to handle Gabriel production, and Shengzhu Base to provide personnel support?”

Roger (Dolphin Base): “Exactly! Doesn't this division of labor make sense? Each base handles what it does best, which should make the whole process more efficient.”

Sonia: “I have no objections. Aside from these arrangements, though, I've also contacted some partners recently to bring in additional personnel to support Base Seven.”

Kengo (Shengzhu Base): “As for the personnel, if you've already found suitable candidates, send them straight to Shengzhu Base to assemble. We can get everyone organized and equipped before making arrangements for the next stage of the operation.”

He paused briefly before adding more.

Kengo: “As for the Thunderstorm Bomb's development, we expect to finish it in another month. By then, we'll be better prepared for both testing and actual deployment.”

Sonia: “Excellent. Let's proceed with that plan.”

At that moment, Jacob leaned closer to the camera and spoke as though something had just occurred to him.

Jacob (Pirate Base): “Since we're supporting Base Seven this time, shouldn't Pirate Base send a few mechs over as well?”

Kengo couldn't help laughing when he heard that.

Kengo: “Sure! Hahaha! At least this time, we don't have to keep it a secret from Sonia!”

Sonia immediately looked up at those words.

Sonia: “You've got some nerve saying that!”

He shook his head helplessly.

Sonia: “You were all so secretive before, and now suddenly you're being so generous!”

The others on the screen burst into laughter.

Even Roger, who had looked serious until then, couldn't help smiling.

Once the laughter had died down, Kengo spoke again.

Kengo: “Joking aside, now that Red is beginning to understand the bigger picture, we need to give him all the support we can.”

Sonia's expression grew more serious as he listened.

Sonia: “I wouldn't say he knows everything just yet.”

Sonia: “Still, now that he's uncovered some of the clues and begun dealing with matters concerning Base Seven, we should offer our assistance when the time is right.”

He looked at everyone on the screen.

Sonia: “After all, some things can't be accomplished by one person alone. If we're in a position to help, there's no reason to leave them to shoulder all the pressure by themselves.”

Jacob: “I agree.”

Jacob nodded and picked up the documents beside him.

Jacob: “Pirate Base expects to finish preparing the mechs within a week. We'll send them directly to the designated location, and they'll depart alongside the newly built vehicle.”

Sonia: “Excellent! I'll leave that in your hands, then.”

Jacob: “It's no trouble. Now that we've decided to help, we might as well make sure everything is ready in one go.”

Kengo: “Shengzhu Base will organize the supplies at the same time, so the support personnel can collect everything before departure. I'll arrange all the necessary equipment, provisions, and any research documents they might need later.”

Roger: “Dolphin Base has made progress as well. We've already completed one Gabriel. Once its preparations have been checked and confirmed, it'll be ready for dispatch and will head out with the rest of the support forces.”

Sonia nodded with satisfaction.

Sonia: “Excellent. It looks like everything is progressing smoothly at each base.”

He glanced around at everyone on the screen, his tone noticeably more relaxed than before.

Sonia: “Then I'll leave everyone to carry out their respective plans. I'll continue coordinating the support operation for Base Seven. Please report any progress or necessary adjustments as soon as possible.”

Sonia: “Let's work together and get this done right.”

Kengo: “You can count on us!”

Roger: “Leave it to us!”

Jacob: “We'll have everything ready within a week. You have my word!”

Sonia smiled and nodded.

Sonia: “Good! Thank you, everyone.”

He turned to Cooper beside him.

Sonia: “Cooper will now walk everyone through the implementation schedule.”

Cooper immediately opened the documents he had prepared and projected the proposed timeline onto the conference screen.

Cooper: “Everyone, next, I'll go over the implementation schedule we've drawn up so far…”

Sonia left the conference room and headed straight into another office without stopping.

Inside, Brick, Morrison, Marshall, and Staff Officer Rosa were already seated around the conference table.

Sonia pulled out a chair and sat down, his gaze moving across the room.

Before he could speak, Brick was the first to break the silence.

Brick: “I know this mission has something to do with Red, but what I don't understand is why Staff Officer Rosa has to come along.”

His gaze settled on Rosa, a hint of disdain in his voice.

Brick: “Marshall has been with us for a long time. We've been through life-and-death situations together. I have no problem with him joining us.”

Brick: “But Staff Officer Rosa… with all due respect, I don't see why he needs to come with us.”

Morrison spoke up as well.

Morrison: “I agree. This is a mission to Base Seven, not some routine inspection. Since it involves Red, we need to be especially careful about who we bring along.”

He glanced at Rosa.

Morrison: “I don't see why a staff officer needs to put himself in danger personally.”

Sonia raised a hand, signaling the two men to calm down.

Sonia: “I understand your concerns. However, since Rosa has volunteered for this mission, let's hear his reasons directly from him.”

Rosa had remained silent throughout.

He looked at the two men before him, his hands clasped together, his knuckles turning slightly pale.

After a few seconds, he finally spoke.

Rosa: “I'm sorry… Please, let me explain this myself.”

Brick raised an eyebrow.

Brick: “Oh? Well, I'd like to hear what reason you have, Staff Officer.”

Rosa ignored his tone and turned to Sonia instead.

Rosa: “Sonia, please let me explain everything.”

Sonia studied him in silence for a moment.

Sonia: “Are you sure? Once you say this out loud, there's no going back to pretending it never happened.”

Rosa slowly nodded.

Rosa: “I'm sure.”

He took a deep breath and straightened his back.

Rosa: “However, I don't want to speak as a staff officer.”

He turned his gaze toward Brick and Morrison.

Rosa: “Please allow me to explain this to you as a soldier.”

Marshall tilted his head slightly when he heard those words.

He had known Rosa for a long time, but this was the first time he had ever heard him speak in such a tone.

Beside him, Morrison repeated the word under his breath.

Morrison: “…A soldier?”

A cold smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

Morrison: “How interesting. I didn't know a staff officer could still remember that he used to be a soldier.”

Rosa did not argue back.

He simply lowered his head, as though silently accepting the remark.

Then, at last, he revealed the secret he had kept buried for ten years.

Rosa: “Ten years ago, Base Three was still our primary mech production facility.”

Rosa: “Back then, many of the mechs, equipment, and resources we needed were still on the continent of Sade. To retrieve them, the base's high command decided to dispatch troops there on a mission.”

Brick nodded.

Brick: “We know about that. The orders we received back then were for Red to lead a team to the continent of Sade to locate and recover the mechs.”

Morrison: “We always thought it was a decision made by the higher-ups.”

Rosa fell silent for a moment.

Rosa: “Not entirely.”

He raised his head and looked directly at them.

Rosa: “I was the one who planned that mission and ordered it to be carried out.”

The air seemed to freeze in that instant.

Brick's expression stiffened.

Morrison slowly lowered his arms, which had been crossed over his chest.

The two exchanged a glance, seemingly unable to comprehend what Rosa had just said.

Brick: “…What did you say?”

Rosa did not look away.

Rosa: “I was the one who led the planning of the operation that sent troops to the continent of Sade.”

Morrison: “Wait a minute.”

Morrison frowned, as though searching Rosa's words for some kind of misunderstanding.

Morrison: “The orders we received back then clearly came from the higher command.”

Rosa: “The orders you received were indeed official. But I was responsible for planning the mission, allocating forces, and arranging the deployment of multiple squads.”

He paused briefly.

Rosa: “Including Red's squad.”

Brick slowly rose to his feet.

The chair legs scraped harshly against the floor.

Brick: “So… ten years ago, when we nearly died on the continent of Sade, it was all because of your decision?”

Rosa: “Yes.”

No excuses.

No attempt to shift the blame.

Just one brief answer.

That answer was enough to make Brick's anger erupt.

Brick: “You son of a—!”

He slammed his palm against the table.

Brick: “Do you have any idea what we went through trying to survive on the continent of Sade?”

Rosa said nothing.

Brick: “When we got there, we discovered that we weren't the only squad sent in!”

Brick: “There were other units! One squad after another kept getting sent in!”

His voice grew louder with every word.

Brick: “We thought that if we found the mechs and completed the mission, we'd have a chance of making it back. But what happened?”

Brick: “Other squads kept losing contact, and some never even managed to send back a final message!”

Brick clenched his fists tightly.

Brick: “We had no idea how many enemies we were facing, whether any reinforcements were coming, or whether we'd be the next squad to be wiped out!”

Brick: “Every single day, all we could think about was how to stay alive!”

Brick: “Red led us from place to place, and we still had to protect the innocent civilians caught up in all of this. We barely held on until Zander and the others finally came to rescue us!”

He glared at Rosa.

Brick: “And now you're telling me that you were the one who set all of this in motion?”

Rosa lowered his head.

Rosa: “Yes.”

Brick: “Who gave you the right?!”

His roar silenced the entire office.

Brick: “Who gave you the right to decide our fate?”

Rosa's lips trembled slightly.

He wanted to answer, but realized he had no reason that could possibly convince them.

In the end, all he could do was speak in a low voice.

Rosa: “I'm sorry.”

Brick: “Don't tell me you're sorry!”

Brick's eyes reddened slightly.

Brick: “Do you think saying you're sorry will bring back everyone who died?”

Morrison stood up as well.

Unlike Brick, he did not raise his voice. Instead, he spoke in a tone that was almost icy.

Morrison: “There's something I want to know.”

He stared at Rosa.

Morrison: “Before those squads were sent out, did you know how dangerous it was over there?”

Rosa remained silent for several seconds.

Rosa: “I knew it was a high-risk mission, but I underestimated the actual threats in the area and overestimated the squads' ability to complete the mission without adequate support.”

Morrison: “So you knew there were risks, and you still sent that many people over there?”

Rosa: “Yes.”

Morrison let out a cold laugh.

Morrison: “Wonderful.”

He nodded, but his gaze grew even colder.

Morrison: “At least this time, you aren't hiding behind some excuse about the greater good.”

Rosa: “At the time, I believed the resources at Base Three were crucial to us. If we could successfully recover those mechs, we could strengthen the base's defenses and give more people a chance to survive.”

Morrison: “And then?”

Rosa: “I thought deploying multiple squads separately would increase the chances of success.”

Morrison cut him off.

Morrison: “You thought?”

Morrison: “You gambled with our lives on a plan you merely thought would work?”

Rosa had no answer.

Morrison slowly shook his head.

Morrison: “Now I finally understand.”

Morrison: “All those years ago, we kept wondering why the higher-ups had sent so many squads on the same mission. Why they kept ordering us forward when the situation was so uncertain.”

He looked at Brick.

Morrison: “It turns out we didn't even know who had sent us into that hell in the first place.”

Brick did not respond.

He simply kept glaring at Rosa. The anger in his eyes was no longer just about the fear of death, but also about the truth that had remained hidden from them for the past ten years.

Brick: “So, is this why you called us here today? To tell us all this?”

Rosa: “That's not the only reason.”

He finally raised his head.

Rosa: “I know this mission to Base Seven involves Red and may also be connected to the unresolved issues from back then. I want to take part personally and help you complete the mission.”

Brick: “Spare me.”

Brick interrupted him without the slightest courtesy.

Brick: “Do you want to come because you've discovered something? Or have you finally reached the point where you can't stand living with what you did ten years ago?”

Rosa did not answer immediately.

Because Brick had hit upon part of the truth.

It wasn't as though Rosa had never thought about that mission over the past ten years.

Whenever the missing personnel lists were updated, or another squad was confirmed to have been wiped out, he would revisit his decisions over and over again.

He had once told himself that people died in war, that the base needed resources, and that every military operation came with risks that had to be accepted.

But none of those reasons could bring the dead back.

Nor could they free the survivors from their suffering.

That became even harder to ignore when he later learned that Aiton's uncle had also died in connection with those events.

That name transformed what he had once been able to classify as a “mission casualty” into a person he could no longer bring himself to overlook.

Rosa: “Both.”

He finally admitted the truth.

Rosa: “I do carry my own guilt. And I do believe I should take responsibility for the decisions I made back then.”

Rosa: “But I won't ask you to accept me just because of that.”

He took a deep breath.

Rosa: “I know that Red led you through those ten years and helped you survive. You lost your comrades, and you watched countless innocent people get caught up in the war.”

Rosa: “And Aiton's uncle…”

His voice faltered slightly.

Rosa: “His death made me realize more clearly that the consequences of that mission didn't end when you left the continent of Sade.”

Rosa: “Those who survived still had to live with the pain of losing their loved ones and endure everything that came afterward.”

He lowered his head.

Rosa: “Meanwhile, I stayed at the base, carrying on with my work and issuing orders as usual, as though those events would become part of the past if I simply stopped talking about them.”

Rosa: “But they never truly became the past.”

He raised his head and looked at Brick and Morrison.

Rosa: “I owe the dead an explanation, and I owe you an apology.”

Rosa: “I'm sorry.”

This time, Brick did not shout again.

He simply stared at Rosa coldly.

Only after a long silence did he finally speak.

Brick: “You know what? I wish you hadn't said anything today.”

Rosa froze for a moment.

Brick: “At least before today, we could tell ourselves that it was simply a bad order from the higher-ups.”

Brick: “We could hate that decision. We could hate those irresponsible orders. But at least we didn't know who had sent us into that place.”

He paused for a moment.

Brick: “And now?”

Brick: “Now I don't even know what I'm supposed to think of you.”

Morrison remained silent.

But the way he looked at Rosa had changed completely.

At first, he had merely questioned whether Rosa was suitable for this operation.

Now, he wasn't even sure he was willing to fight alongside the man.

Marshall, who had been sitting quietly beside them, had not interrupted once.

Only now did he finally speak.

Marshall: “Brick, Morrison… I know it's hard for you to accept this right now.”

The two men turned to look at him.

Marshall did not rush to defend Rosa.

He simply looked down at his hands, as though recalling something that had happened not long ago.

Marshall: “I know the Rosa I know is a little different from the one you know.”

He raised his head and looked at Rosa.

Marshall: “Do you remember the time the Mother-class monster invaded?”

Rosa was slightly taken aback.

Marshall: “There were many injured people near the base, and the civilians hadn't had time to evacuate. The whole area was in chaos, and the medical staff were completely overwhelmed.”

Marshall: “Back then, Staff Officer Rosa didn't stay in the command room waiting for reports.”

He recalled the scene.

The chaotic streets, the injured civilians, and the cries for help coming from every direction.

He remembered Rosa personally helping carry the injured, coordinating medical personnel, and even risking his life to enter areas that had not yet been fully evacuated to help bring civilians to safety.

Rosa was not simply a man who stood in front of a map issuing orders.

At least that time, Marshall had witnessed Rosa choose to stand beside those who needed help.

Marshall: “During that operation, I helped him rescue the injured and evacuate civilians.”

Marshall: “I've seen how he works, and I know he's not someone who simply doesn't care whether other people live or die.”

Brick furrowed his brow.

Brick: “So, you're trying to speak up for him?”

Marshall: “No.”

Marshall answered firmly.

Marshall: “I'm not trying to excuse what he did.”

He turned toward Rosa.

Marshall: “I just don't want to dismiss everything I've witnessed with my own eyes simply because I've learned this today.”

He paused briefly.

Marshall: “At the same time, just because I've saved people alongside him doesn't mean I think you should forgive him.”

Marshall: “I have no right to tell you how you should feel about what you've been through.”

He looked at Brick and Morrison.

Marshall: “If you hate him, I understand. If you don't want to carry out this mission alongside him, I won't object to that either.”

Marshall: “I just hope you'll hear what he's actually trying to do before making your decision.”

Morrison looked at Rosa coldly.

Morrison: “Fine. Then let's get this straight.”

He placed both hands on the table and leaned forward slightly.

Morrison: “Staff Officer Rosa, what exactly are you hoping to get out of this mission?”

Rosa: “I'm not trying to get anything out of it.”

Morrison: “Don't give me that.”

Morrison: “Nobody volunteers for a high-risk mission without a reason. Is it those old records? Is it Red? Or are you just trying to make yourself feel better?”

Rosa fell silent for a moment.

Rosa: “I want to be of help, and I want to face the unresolved issues from that time myself.”

Rosa: “If this mission really does uncover clues related to those events, I don't want to stand at a distance again and simply watch others take the risks.”

Brick: “So you're planning to pay your debt with your own life?”

Rosa: “No.”

Rosa shook his head.

Rosa: “If all I wanted was to die on some mission, that wouldn't help anyone.”

Rosa: “I won't treat my own sacrifice as an apology, and I won't ask you to accept it as one.”

He looked at the two men, his voice growing more resolute.

Rosa: “What I want to do is explain everything I know, provide as much help as I can when needed, and take responsibility for whatever consequences this operation may bring.”

Rosa: “As for whether you'll forgive me, that's your choice to make.”

Brick remained silent for several seconds before finally speaking in a cold voice.

Brick: “I don't accept your apology.”

Rosa: “I understand.”

Brick: “No. You still don't understand.”

Brick straightened up.

Brick: “It's not that we're refusing to forgive you because of something you did today. We've simply finally learned what really happened during that mission all those years ago.”

Brick: “And right now, I'm still not ready to accept that truth.”

Morrison stood up as well.

Morrison: “Neither am I.”

He looked at Rosa, his tone utterly uncompromising.

Morrison: “If you really want to come with us to Base Seven, prove that you have something valuable to contribute.”

Morrison: “But don't expect us to follow your orders once we get there. And don't expect us to go easy on you just because you feel guilty.”

Rosa: “I won't ask you to.”

Morrison: “You'd better not.”

The two men turned and headed for the door.

As they reached the doorway, Marshall suddenly called out to them.

Marshall: “Brick. Morrison.”

The two men stopped.

Marshall: “I'm not asking you to forgive him. But I hope you can separate the mission itself from the anger you feel toward him.”

Brick did not turn around.

Brick: “I know the mission is important.”

He paused briefly.

Brick: “But that doesn't mean I have to accept him.”

Morrison continued.

Morrison: “If his intelligence is useful, I'll listen. If he can help, I won't deliberately get in his way.”

He turned his head and gave Rosa one last look.

Morrison: “Other than that, don't expect me to feel anything but contempt for you.”

With that, the two men left the office.

The door slowly closed behind them.

Marshall gazed at the door and sighed softly.

Rosa: “Marshall, thank you.”

Marshall: “You don't need to thank me.”

He turned around, his expression conflicted.

Marshall: “I only spoke about what I witnessed with my own eyes.”

Marshall: “As for the decisions you made back then, I can't defend them for you. And you can't expect others to accept you just because I've saved people alongside you.”

Rosa slowly nodded.

Rosa: “I know.”

Marshall stood up and headed toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped once more.

Marshall: “Staff Officer Rosa.”

Rosa: “Yes?”

Marshall: “You said today that you wanted to face this as a soldier.”

He looked at Rosa.

Marshall: “Then don't make today, in this office, the only time you consider yourself a soldier.”

Marshall: “Once you reach Base Seven, no one else can decide what you can do or what responsibilities you should shoulder.”

Marshall: “I won't plead your case, and I won't vouch for you. But if you truly want to change something, prove it through your actions.”

Rosa did not answer. He simply nodded solemnly.

Marshall then left the room.

Only Sonia and Rosa remained in the office.

Sonia looked at Rosa and waited a long while before speaking.

Sonia: “You know that telling them the truth today doesn't mean they'll accept you.”

Rosa: “I know.”

Sonia: “And you know they may never forgive you.”

Rosa: “Yes.”

Rosa gazed out the window.

Rosa: “I used to believe that as long as a mission succeeded and the base continued to operate, those sacrifices would have meaning.”

Rosa: “But I eventually understood that, to those who have lost their loved ones, a so-called successful mission doesn't lessen their suffering in the slightest.”

He paused for a moment.

Rosa: “I can't bring back the dead, nor can I decide when the survivors should let go of the past.”

Rosa: “All I can do is admit my mistakes and stop running away from them.”

Sonia listened in silence.

Finally, he stood up and straightened the documents on the table.

Sonia: “Then from here on, your actions will speak for you.”

Rosa nodded.

Ten years ago, he had sat in a commander's seat and determined the fates of many people.

Ten years later, he had finally decided to step into the wounds left behind by those orders.

This time, he would no longer ask anyone to trust him.

He only hoped that, by the time the mission at Base Seven was over, he would at least be able to prove one thing—

That he was finally willing to take responsibility for the orders he had given.

Weimar War 166 — The Fate of the Future

——— Near Ironwall Pass · The Place Where Luther Fell ———

The roar of the thrusters gradually faded.

Luther lowered his head and checked the status of his machine.

“Arm and leg systems are normal… Atmospheric adaptation is also functioning properly.”

The numbers on the screen continued to fluctuate.

“Thruster fuel… 10% remaining.”

Luther fell silent for a moment.

“At this rate, I won't be able to reach any base.”

He raised his head and looked at the unfamiliar world before him.

“Where… exactly am I?”

The machine slowly descended at the edge of the forest.

Before him lay a forest that had long since been abandoned.

Dead trees intertwined with one another, while the ground was covered with a thick layer of decaying leaves.

A strange smell lingered in the air.

A faint scent of mint.

以及……

And…

The stench of rotting corpses.

Luther frowned.

He immediately went on high alert, checked his surroundings, and retrieved a map from the machine.

The map unfolded.

Luther's expression gradually darkened.

“Base Three… is too far away.”

His finger continued moving across the map.

“The nearest base, Base One…”

Luther paused.

“A monster's nest.”

He stared at the map in silence for a long time.

Eventually, his eyes settled on another set of coordinates.

“Base Seven…?”

Luther clenched his teeth.

“First, I need to get out of the monsters' territory.”

The machine powered up again.

However, just as Luther was preparing to leave, he failed to notice—

Deep within the forest, a long, slender black tentacle slowly withdrew into the ground.

As if something…

…was watching him.

——— All Bases · Online Command Conference ———

Inside the conference room, the holographic images of several base commanders appeared simultaneously.

Sonia looked at everyone.

“So, Redd's side is the best place for us to send support right now?”

Sander nodded.

“It should be them.”

“We not only have to deal with damaged machines here, but also redistribute our remaining resources. It will be difficult to spare any personnel in the short term.”

Redd frowned.

“Wait.”

“You… can't support us at all?”

Roger shook his head.

“I can send a batch of supplies over.”

“But the critical window for the rescue should still be on your side.”

Kengo continued:

“We'll send drones to assist with the search first.”

Sonia nodded.

“Alright.”

He looked at Redd.

“Redd, can you handle things on your end?”

Redd remained silent for several seconds.

Then he nodded.

“I think so.”

“We've already prepared several transport vehicles here.”

Sonia nodded.

“Alright. Report back immediately if anything happens.”

“Then that's all for today's meeting.”

One by one, the others' holographic images disappeared.

Sonia, however, did not leave.

“Redd, stay behind.”

Soon, only the two of them remained in the conference room.

Redd looked at Sonia.

“What is it?”

Sonia did not answer immediately.

He simply stared at Redd.

“When… did your mission actually begin?”

Redd froze for a moment.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean…”

Sonia's voice became low and serious.

“When did you first decide that you were going to Base Seven?”

Redd fell silent.

很久。

For a long time.

Long enough that Sonia almost thought he would never answer.

Finally, Redd slowly spoke.

“Are you sure you want to know?”

“This whole thing… is a little unbelievable.”

Sonia looked at him.

“Matt told me a little about it.”

Redd's expression grew even more serious.

“Then I'll ask you again.”

“Are you sure you want me to tell you?”

Sonia did not hesitate for even a moment.

“Yes.”

Redd took a deep breath.

“Because Matt gave me some… briefings about the future.”

Sonia frowned.

“The future?”

Redd nodded.

“I'm in them.”

“Yuri is in them too.”

Sonia's expression subtly changed.

“What do they say?”

Redd did not answer.

“I'll send you the files later.”

“Read them yourself.”

He stood up.

“I still have a mission to handle.”

Sonia watched his back as he walked away.

“Redd.”

Redd stopped.

“Would you… be willing to become the commander of Base Seven?”

Redd turned around.

“What?”

“What do you mean?”

His eyes gradually sharpened.

“Is this the real reason you asked me to stay today?”

Sonia shook his head.

“No.”

“Every base needs someone in charge now.”

“We can't afford to leave any base without someone managing it anymore.”

Redd was silent for a moment.

“Let's talk about it after I return from this mission.”

Sonia nodded.

“Alright.”

“I'll ask Bruno to assist Shengzhu's side.”

“Have him help with the construction of Base Seven.”

Redd smiled faintly.

“Let's talk about all that after we bring Luther back.”

“Alright.”

The two ended the call.

Redd's image disappeared.

A few seconds later—

A notification sound came from Sonia's terminal.

A file.

It had only a simple filename.

“Future”

Sonia opened the file.

The first page.

He froze.

The second page.

His brow began to furrow.

The third page…

His hands began to tremble slightly.

It wasn't tactical data.

It wasn't a base layout.

Nor was it an ordinary prediction report.

Instead, it was a series of…

death records from the future.

Sonia stared at the screen, his face growing paler and paler.

He closed the briefing for the first time.

He took a deep breath.

Then opened it again.

After several more pages,

he closed it again.

“Impossible…”

he whispered.

A third time.

A fourth time.

He was beginning to fear turning to the next page.

But in the end, he gritted his teeth and continued reading.

He didn't know how much time had passed.

Sonia suddenly stood up.

The chair was knocked to the floor.

He didn't even have time to close the terminal before rushing out of the command room.

A few minutes later.

Sonia leaned against the sink.

He vomited violently.

He raised his head and looked at himself in the mirror.

His face was deathly pale.

His hands were still trembling.

“What… is this…?”

He couldn't understand it.

He couldn't accept it either.

Just as he was about to return to the command room—

Cooper was standing at the doorway.

“Sonia?”

Sonia suddenly stopped.

“Cooper?”

Cooper looked at him.

“Are you alright?”

Then he noticed the terminal still glowing behind Sonia.

“What is that?”

Sonia did not answer.

Cooper walked into the command room.

The screen was still displaying the page Sonia had just been viewing.

Cooper took one look at it.

The next second,

his expression froze as well.

“…What is this?”

Sonia slowly spoke.

“This is… Redd.”

The Redd on the screen no longer looked human at all.

His body was pierced by countless monstrous tentacles.

His limbs were twisted.

His chest and abdomen were wrapped in masses of black tissue.

But the most terrifying part—

was his head.

Countless fiber-like tentacles were burrowing into different parts of his skull.

They even spread through his eyes and ears, extending down the back of his neck.

His eyes had rolled back.

His body seemed to have become a vessel for some kind of monster.

Cooper stared at the image for a long time.

He said nothing.

Finally, he slowly pulled over a nearby chair and sat down.

“…So.”

He stared at the screen.

“This is why he chose to go to Base Seven?”

Sonia nodded.

“Yes.”

Neither of them spoke again.

Cooper turned to the next page.

Another person appeared on the screen.

Yuri.

The next page.

Base One.

The next page.

Monster's Nest.

The next page…

Redd's Death.

Cooper's pupils gradually widened.

Sonia seemed to realize something at the same time.

He suddenly looked at Cooper.

“Wait…”

Cooper looked up at the same moment.

Their eyes met.

A possibility neither of them had ever considered was slowly coming together in their minds.

“Redd was supposed to have died long ago… along with Yuri…”

Sonia's voice began to tremble.

“He's changing fate.”

Cooper continued his thought.

“He's… changing that future.”

Sonia shook his head.

“No.”

He looked back at the screen.

“If he were simply trying to change it, he wouldn't need to deliberately find a way to go to the rear. He could just retire.”

Cooper fell silent.

Suddenly, it seemed as though he remembered something.

“…Luther.”

Sonia jolted.

The two looked at the file again.

Why did Redd know that Luther would fall near Base Seven?

Why had he prepared the vehicles in advance?

Why was he so determined to go there?

Why, when no one else could provide support, did he accept this mission without hesitation?

答案……

The answer…

Perhaps it had been written in that briefing from the very beginning.

Sonia slowly turned to the final page.

There was only one sentence on the screen.

“If fate has already decided the outcome, then at least let it happen where I choose.”

Cooper stared at those words.

For a long time, he said nothing.

And Sonia finally understood.

“Redd…”

“He isn't choosing to escape fate.”

His voice was almost too quiet to hear.

“He is choosing… his own future.”

Cooper slowly stood up.

“No.”

He looked at Redd on the screen.

“He is changing the future of Weimason.”

The two stood in the silent command room.

And at that very moment, they finally understood—

All of Redd's seemingly inexplicable actions,

those strange decisions,

the supplies he had prepared in advance,

even the reason he insisted on going to Base Seven…

all finally had an answer.

It wasn't that he didn't know what he was walking toward.

Quite the opposite.

He knew exactly what awaited him.

And this time—

he chose to walk into that future with his own hands.

Only so that the others would never have to.

Far away.

In the direction of Base Seven.

Faint lights and campfires glowed beside the tents as everyone prepared the supplies for loading onto the transport vehicles.

And the gears of fate… had already begun to turn.
